Most nurses won't be surprised by the results of a recent poll indicating that 73% of nurses believe that staffing on their unit is inadequate, and more than half believe that the quality of nursing care on their unit has declined in the past year.
Policy makers and hospital executives concerned about the growing nurse shortage should pay close attention to the poll results. Nearly 24% of the 10,000 nurses responding to the poll indicated that they are considering leaving nursing, with inadequate staffing cited as a major reason for their dissatisfaction. The nationwide poll was conducted by the American Nurses Association between March 31 and May 12, 2008. For more results, go to www.safestaffingsaveslives.org These results are similar to those of the HEART/AFSCME survey of Illinois nurses conducted last year. According to that survey, 90% of Illinois nurses believe that increasing nurse staffing is the most important step hospitals can take to improve patient care. When asked what they thought was the biggest problem in nursing care in hospitals, 77% of nurses cited inadequate staffing and a high nurse-to-patient ratios. For the full survey, go to here |
