MASSACHUSETTS NURSES WIN STAFFING RATIOS VICTORY PDF Print E-mail

On May 22, the Massachusetts House of Representatives voted 115-35 for a bill that would set safe nurse staffing ratios.  Nurses in Massachusetts have fought for staffing ratios legislation for several years, working closely with health care and patient advocacy groups in the Coalition to Protect Massachusetts Patients (go to www.protectmasspatients.org for more information)

The bill, titled the "Patient Safety Act," will now move to the Senate, which failed to consider a similar bill in 2006 after it was passed by the House.  Proponents are urging the Senate to act, citing data on the increase in hospital-acquired infections and medical errors.

Key provisions of the bill:

  • Directs the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to develop and implement staffing standards and limits on the number of patients assigned to an RN.
  • Implements safe staffing limits in all teaching hospitals by 2009 and all community hospitals by 2011.
  • Prevents hospitals from reducing support staff, such as aides, LPNs, technicians.

The effort in Massachusetts is one of a number around to country - including here in Illinois- in which nurses concerned about the quality of care in hospitals are leading the fight to establish safe nurse staffing ratios.
