Campaign for Safe Patient Care PDF Print E-mail

Patient safety concerns us all.

Groups from across Illinois are joining together to work for safe patient care. We all pay a staggering price for medical errors - especially patients and their families.  Join Citizen Action/Illinois, the Champaign County Health Care Consumers, Health and Medicine Policy Research Group, the RN2RN Network, Women Employed and AFSCME Council 31 to support the goals of the Campaign for Safe Patient Care.

Campaign for Safe Patient Care Goals:

Help Illinois residents make informed decisions when choosing a hospital by providing them with information on how to assess and compare the quality of care in hospitals through the new IL Department of Public Health website and other sources.

In order to make smart choices about hospitals, consumers must know where to find credible data on quality and how to understand that data.  The recently-launched Illinois Hospital Report Card Act website www.healthcarereportcard.illinois.gov and several national websites can be great resources for anyone who wants to compare hospitals and learn more about their options.

Support state legislation that protects patients and ensures that they receive quality care by requiring hospitals to maintain safe nurse staffing levels at all times.

Many research studies around the country have found that the single most important factor in improving patient outcomes is improving nurse staffing.  The Campaign supports legislation that sets a maximum number of patients an RN can be required to care for in each hospital unit.  Such legislation will ensure adequate nurse staffing at the bedside for all Illinois patients.

Educate patients about their rights and their options for filing complaints if they get poor quality care.

Too often, patients don't know their rights or don't know where to turn when they have concerns or complaints.  The Campaign will work to provide patients and their families with the information they need to improve the care they receive and at the same time let decision makers - from public officials to hospital executives - hear patients' accounts of their hospital care.
